What People are Saying

From Cari,
located in Sugar Land, TX USA

I have three kids... One girl with thick, long, straight hair... One with fine, layered hair... and a boy with shorter hair... I used the video "how to cut your Children's hair at home" to help cut all three kids' hair. Honestly, I was scared at first, but this video made it so easy... I can't wait to do it again. I may have a new calling in life!

Cheers,

Cari,

Home Perms....Don’t do them.

I have had several emails asking me about perming children’s hair, so I thought it best to enter something here on my blog to answer your questions. First of all, I do not recommend doing perms at home. It is much better, if you insist on perming your child’s hair, to have a professional do it.

The chemicals in a perm are very strong and timing is very important.

Leave it to the professionals.

Okay, if you must perm your child’s hair... Read through all of the instructions from the product first. Make sure your child understands that she will have to sit very still for a long time while you put the rods in.

Tip 1 Make sure the rods are not too tight or too loose, even tension is very important because stress of any kind on her hair can break it with the perm solution.

Tip 2 When you get to the rinsing and neutralizing stage be very careful – this is the make or break time – Set a timer when you apply the solution and follow the directions very carefully.

Tip 3 When it's time to rinse off the perm solution do it thoroughly and under low water pressure so you won't disturb the hair too much on the rods. When you think it is all rinsed out rinse a little bit more.

Tip 4 Before you apply the neutralizer blot as much of water off the rods as you can.

Although "they" have made big improvements, perming is still damaging to the hair no matter who does it. However a good professional knows how to minimize this.

Good luck

Braiding

Braiding is easy just follow these simple instructions.

Step 1 Parting hair
First of all take the ponytail I told you how to make and
part the hair into 2 equal sections using a center parting.

Step 2 Separate it
Now holding one of the 2 sections of hair you have made on either side of the head, separate that hair into 3 equal sections

Step 3 Criss Cross
Now holding one of the 2 sections of hair you have made on either side of the head, separate that hair into 3 equal sections
- one in your right hand
- one in your left
- with the remaining section in the center
Cross one section of hair over the center section and
then do the same with the other section, pulling
the hair as tightly as you want for the look you are going for.

Step 4 Continue & Fasten
Continue doing this, crossing one side then the other over what always becomes a new middle section, until the hair is braided.
Then fasten about 2 inches from ends with a covered elastic.

Tips
• Try doing this on wet hair or just spray the hair with
a little water to make the hair easier to work with.
• Once you've got that down try doing a braid without
the hair being in a ponytail first.
As shown in our step-by-step video.

Gum Removed Thanks!!!

Reading your great blog was so helpful to me. My 5-year old granddaughter Fiona is visiting me in Ireland. Her Mum is flying over from Canada to visit and take Fiona back to Canada. So... of course you can imagine the high excitement of Mum's expected arrival. And what did Fiona do? She managed to get bubble gum or just gum all squished into her bangs. ooooooooooooooh... my poor heart.

I was threshing around in an agony... thinking, oh! the bangs will have to be cut off, and what a sight her Mum will find on her arrival!

Then I found your blog.

I took your advice and applied a liberal amount of peanut butter to the effected area, extending out about a quarter of an inch, making sure to cover all of the gum space. Then I gently rubbed the area between my thumb and fingertips. The gum loosened its 'stickiness' and I slowly began pulling the gum from her hair.

We managed to remove the gum, not cutting any hair off.

And smiles were restored in time for Mum's arrival.

Thanks so much, now I want to order your DVD to give my daughter so she can cut all her kids hair.

Dorothy
In Ireland

Thanks Dorothy your DVD is on it's way!

YIKKES!!! Has your child ever cut their own hair?

Don’t panic, it’s not the end of the world.

I just heard from someone whose child cut her own hair and
her little brother's bangs. She was fit to be tied as she had
made an appointment with a photographer to have a family
photo taken that day. She contacted us and asked what she
could do about it after having just purchased our
DVD How
to Cut Your Child's Hair at Home.

I said
"If you follow the simple instructions in our video "how to
cut your Child's hair at home" this can be fixed with ease.
You would either use the short layered cut,or the long layer
cut, for most problems resulting from your child’s creative
endeavors with their own hair. The two ways we show you
how to cut a fringe aka bangs are there too."

I am waiting to hear how it all went and I will post her response when I do...

Coloring Kid's Hair

TEMPORARY COLOR

Coloring your child's hair can be tricky. Hair Color products
you find in a drug store are either semi permanent or permanent
colors. This means neither one of them will wash out. That's why
I am addressing this issue. Temporarily coloring your kids hair
can be fun to do because it can be washed out. Where both
the semi permanent or permanent products contain a developer
chemical and that is why they stay on the hair.

We are currently researching some great products for you.
Keep an eye open for our next few posts.

What People are Saying

From Violet,
located in Canada

Hi Bruce.

The DVD arrived yesterday and my little guy and I watched it last night. After we saw the Long Layered cut, Tegan said, "See that haircut Nanny, I'm gonna do that tomorrow". I couldn't help but laugh at his enthusiasm. At 3 1/2 Reality is nearly nonexistent. I had to tell him not to cut his own hair. I thought of the dolls in the house and concluded he couldn't do much harm to them if he "practiced" when I wasn't looking.
He gave my plants a "haircut" the other day!

Thanks for a great product and clear, easy to follow instructions. I know I'll do a better job of his next cut. I may even practice a bit on my own.

I wish all deliveries were this fast.

Please put me down for the next DVD.

Hair Styles for Spring

Spring is here
For many of us, this means a new look for your youngster.

Long Hair Solutions

One great way to deal with long hair is to "bob" it or cut it to
one length, shoulder length or shorter.

This is a great way to solve thin and or fine hair problems and
unwanted layers too.

Cutting the hair in a bob cleans up any damage that winter
scarves and turtle necks can cause.

A bob can still allow you to bring at least some of the hair up
into a ponytail. Or even two ponytails on either side of the
head for a cute, fresh new look.

How to make a ponytail can be found in the March 29, 2007
entry on the blog.

Simple, easy ways to work through these and other hair
dilemmas can be found on our DVD
"How to Cut Your Child's Hair at Home"

How to make a ponytail

Ponytails, first of all let me explain this is not rocket science, it's actually easy to do. For the best results your child's hair should be at least shoulder length or longer. Although this can be done on short, bobbed, or even layered hair but in these cases you will not get all the hair up into a ponytail, which can look cute on little girls.

First you will need a comb to part(split the hair into two sections) the hair if you want even ponytails on either side of the head.

Step 1
Standing over your child's head look down at her nose and take the first tooth of the comb and drag it back along the scalp in one stroke, lightly, until you reach the back hairline.

Step 2
Now take a brush and brush each section of hair on either side of her head towards where you want the ponytail to be.

TIP
If your child's hair is tangled now is the time to check out the section in the blog called
_________________________________________________
Problem with combing out hair
If you have a problem combing out your kid's hair because of tangles when it is either wet or dry, this is a good idea. Always start at the ends of the hair and comb out slowly and as you untangle the hair move up the hair-shaft until you are at the roots and have the whole head of hair untangled and ready to either dry or cut. If you want to know more about all this check out the new DVD "How to Cut Your Child's Hair at Home"
_________________________________________________

Now after you have brushed all the hair and have all the tangles out

Step 3
Gather it together one side at a time and secure it with a covered elastic. Repeat this action on the other side. Either low and close to the ear for the traditional looking ponytail or higher up for a more Pippi Longstocking look. This makes it much easier and more acurate using the ear as a guide so the ponytails are equal.

Or

Gather all the hair at once, after making sure all the tangles are out and place one ponytail anywhere on the head you want. Just make sure when you brush the hair you direct it to the location where you want the ponytail to be. Now you can have some fun with the ponytails you have created.

TIP
Use ribbons or wool for a more decorative look. You can even use beads for a little sparkle. make it fun for your child to make the decision about which accessories she wants.

Removing Gum From Hair

Gum, we chew it and throw it away, some people swallow it YUK. Sometimes we step on it or worse get it stuck in our hair. Most everyone has been through this dilemma. Your first temptation may be to cut the hair, DON’T!

The BEST way to remedy this situation is actually quite simple.space

All You'll Needspace

1. Peanut butter - smooth not crunchy
2. Hair clips - ignore this for very short hair

The Step-by-Stepspace

Step 1 Getting the rest of the hair out of the way
Pull the unaffected hair away from the area and secure with a hair clip. This will allow you to focus on the area with the gum in it.space

Step 2 Getting Started
Apply a liberal amount of peanut butter to the effected area, extending out about a quarter of an inch, making sure to cover all of the gum.space

Step 3 Loosening The Gum
Gently rub the area between your thumb and fingertips. The gum will begin to loose its 'stickiness' and, depending on the gum type, may begin to pull apart or 'crumble'.space

Step 4 Removing The Gum
Slowly begin pulling the gum from the hair. It will remove fairly easily.space

Step 5 The Clean Up
Wash the effected area with shampoo to remove the peanut butter. No traces of the gum should remain.

Tips
• For more stubborn gum, apply more peanut butter, gently working it downward - always work from the problem area out to the tips.
• Also works for removing some other candy products
• Works well removing gum from other things.

Caution
* Be sure that the oils in the peanut butter won't cause other issues on clothes

Hair Ties

When you want to tie back hair whether it be for a simple pony tail or a more complicated up-do, remember never use regular elastics. They are extremely hard on hair causing hair breakage. always use those "covered elastics" sometimes called "terry-cloth covered elastics" found in drug and department stores everywhere.

Using Electric Clippers

We were recently asked about using clippers for boys' hair. First you would need to buy some electric clippers that you can buy at some drug stores. They should come with different sized guards which are used to achieve the desired length but are not good for controlling the length without practice. If you want quality clippers that will do a good job expect to pay a minimum of $50. Clippers can be used for doing buzz-cuts on boys or girls if you want. Although your child can still be cut using clippers, it is usually not the case. Clippers may be faster than a scissor cut, a bonus for children who have problems sitting still during a hair cut. Although some children don't like the sound of clippers, especially close to their ears. In addition, some children are tickled by the clippers and would therefore have trouble remaining still for the procedure. Your child would probably be more relaxed at home than in a barbershop or salon however we still think our DVD of How To Cut your Child's Hair at Home is better for anything other than a buzz cut. The clippers are really only good for buzz cuts.

Again we recommend our DVD, which is easy to follow and there are so many variations of haircuts anyone can do using it.

little secrets

These are a couple of little secrets you may or may not know about hair

Add Shine
1. Add a healthy shiny to your hair, try adding 1 or 2 tablespoons of vinegar to the final rinse when washing hair. Dry as usual with a towel, naturally or with a blow dryer.

Add Body
2. If you want to give hair body. Before the final rinse, Pour enough beer onto your head to soak your hair, not a whole bottle (LOL) over hair, massage thoroughly into hair and scalp then give a final rinse.
